One man dug a tunnel. He did get help. This tunnel was dug starting in 1974 and was finished in 1982. It was dug using manual hammers and chisels. Over the years it has been improved and made wider and higher to support cars and truck to reach to a remote village. I hiked up the mountain trail that the tunnel replace. It was about an hour to reach the top of 1600 feet starting at the 1100 level. It right at a mile. Then a mile back. The views were wonderful and we had great weather.
